We briefly outline below the most relevant temporary residence authorizations available in Spain for non-European Union citizens under current regulations. At present, the Spanish Government policies gathering efforts to attract talent, investment and innovation from around the globe, are still being promoted. 1. Investor´s Golden Visa: Under the Law 14/2013 of 27th September 2013 on support for entrepreneurs and their internationalisation (modified by the Law 28/2022 of 21st December on the promotion of the start-up ecosystem), we can find the regulation of the Investor´s Visa, or popularly known as Golden Visa. The Golden visa is a Residence and work permit, granted in consideration of the investment made in Spain by the Applicant, for a minimum amount of 1 million euros in shares of a Spanish Company; 2 million euros in public debt or 500.000 euros in real estate. The duration of this permit is 1 year or 3 years renewable for 5 years, with no obligation of a minimum residence period in Spain per year. Individuals who hold this authorization for residence permit will have an administrative right to live in Spain but not the obligation to become tax resident in Spain. Moreover, no minimum stays are required. The Spanish Golden Visa allows free access to European countries (Schengen Area).
2. Digital Nomad Visa: This type of visa is intended for Applicants who work remotely using exclusively a computer or telecommunications means and systems, either as self-employed or employees of a foreign company located outside Spain. Non-resident Applicants can request a 1-year visa, and residents, a 3-year residence and work authorization, renewable for 5 years. 3. Entrepreneurs Visa: This residence and work authorization is granted to Applicants whishing to start and/or develop an innovative economic activity or of economic interest for the Spanish economy, requiring prior approval of their business project by the Ministry of Industry of Spain. The visa duration is 3 years, renewable for 2 years, with the possibility to apply for a permanent residence after 5 years. 4. Highly Qualified Professionals: This type of visa is an authorization for companies needing to employ highly qualified foreign professionals (graduates or post-graduates from recognized universities or business schools, or professional specialists) in Spain for the duration of the contract, up to a maximum of 3 years, renewable for 2 years.

In addition, in relation to research, training or innovation activities; scientists, researchers, and/or University professors wishing to undertake activities in private or public entities in Spain, can request a residence authorization for the duration of the hosting agreement, with a maximum duration of 3 years renewable for 2 years. 5. Intra-company Transfer Visa: This visa is designed for managers, specialists, or trainees employed who need to be temporarily transferred to Spain by a company located in or outside Spain for work purposes, for a maximum duration of 3 years for manager specialists, and 1 year for trainees. 6. Non-lucrative Visa: This is a residence authorization for Applicants who do not intend to work or carry put any economic or business activity in Spain and they can prove they have sufficient economic means to live during their stay and hold a private health insurance. The applications need to be lodged in the Spanish Consulate of the country of origin. 7. Visas for self-employed individuals: Residence and work authorizations for Applicants wishing to start a business in Spain as self-employed or through a company, according to a business plan.
8. Exceptional circumstances of Family integration: Temporary work and residence authorizations granted to non- European Union foreign family members of Spanish nationals for a period of 5 years, renewable at its expiration for a long-term visa of 10 years. Applicants need to show criminal records clearance in the countries of residence during the last 5 years and they will be obliged to live in Spain more than 6 months per year, otherwise the renewal would be rejected. 9. European Union Family member card: Temporary work and residence authorization granted to family members of a European Union national, Switzerland, or a country of the EU Economic space, who prove to have sufficient financial means to stay in Spain, have a private health insurance, and are registered in a Spanish City Council as living in Spain. The authorization is granted for a period of 5 years, renewable at its expiration for a long-term visa of 10 years and the Applicant shall live in the country for more than 6 months in a year.
